Maryland Governor's Race: Candidate Murphy Supports Arizona's Immigration Bill
Murphy Supports Similar Law in Maryland
Crofton, Maryland (May 27, 2010) – Brian Murphy, Republican candidate for governor of Maryland, said today that he supports the new Arizona immigration bill and the enforcement of immigration laws in Maryland.
"Immigration is a sacred part of the American journey. But becoming an American citizen is a process," Murphy explained. "No one is above the law. In Maryland, illegal immigration poses a law enforcement issue, a safety issue, and a budget issue. This is not a race issue. And I will not allow this to become a race issue. 'Illegal' is not a race. Whether the issue is securing our finances, or securing our borders, Americans are tired of government officials who avoid confronting difficult choices. Maryland deserves real leadership."
"The controversy surrounding Arizona's Senate Bill 1070 is unfounded. Racism is detestable, and this bill specifically prohibits it. It states, 'The attorney general or county attorney shall not investigate complaints that are based solely on race, color or national origin.'
"Further, this bill upholds federal laws and civil rights. It states, 'This act shall be implemented in a manner consistent with federal laws regulating immigration, protecting the civil rights of all persons and respecting the privileges and immunities of United States citizens.'
"I have complete faith that Maryland's law enforcement officials will continue to enforce our laws fairly and without prejudice. Our state and our country are facing real challenges, but my opponents are more interested in rhetoric than in governing. Maryland deserves leaders with solutions," Murphy said.
"Maryland's governor is the chief executive officer and the chief law enforcement officer. As the next governor, I will never shy away from either responsibility. I have pledged to restore fiscal responsibility to Annapolis, and I am committed to balancing our budget without raising taxes. I also pledge to enforce our laws, to provide for the safety of every Marylander, and to give my full support to the members of our law enforcement community," said Murphy.
Brian Murphy and Robert Ehrlich are running in the Maryland Republican Primary on September 14. Governor Martin O'Malley is running in the Democratic Party Primary on September 14. The winners of the respective parties' elections will square off against each other in the November 2 General Election.
